I hate how when you get a new cell phone you have to get a new charger. I have so many chargers that are worthless to me. Chargers never work for more than one type of phone even in the same cell phone company. It’s just another way for companies to make more money. There are so many different chargers for all the different companies. Today I read an article that will help with all of that. Some Mobile Chargers to Become Widely Compatible on ABCNews.com explains how cell phone companies are trying to work together to produce a more usable charge for a wide range of phones. The GSMA mobile phone company is has made an agreement with 17 mobile phone companies to try and produce a standardized phone charger by 2012. The group of companies that have joined the program include 3 Group, AT&T, KTF, LG, mobilkom austria, Motorola, Nokia, Orange, Qualcomm, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telenor, Telstra, T-Mobile and Vodafone.
This will save money for millions. If you forget your charger at home you can just borrow a friend’s. It will also lessen the 51,000 tons of waste that cell chargers produce a year. According to the article every 20 months 48 to 51 million chargers become obsolete. I think what they are trying to do is awesome! If I could just plug my phone into anyone’s charger instead of having to find mine every time it would be a huge time saver. I think my roommate and I have about 5 to 6 chargers in the house and there are only 2 that are useable. The PR of this product could be amazing. Promoting a compatible charger to the public will be easy. It is a great way for the cell phone users to build a better relationship with cell phone companies. It’s about time this step has been taken towards uniting cell phones. I can’t wait till it is a reality.

I have to agree with you that if this idea becomes a reality, it will be the easiest thing in the world to promote. I also have a whole drawer full of cell phone chargers in the basement; heaven only knows why I haven’t thrown them away with the phone! If my household could have one charger that would charge all our phones, life would be so much easier. The simplicity this product would bring, along with its green side effects, will shove the cell phone world forward into a new era.
ReplyDeleteAbout time is right.. I mean, people could have the same brand of phones and they may be similar but that darn charger end is just a tish different. Its not a fun game to play. So by them doing this - they'll make a lot of people happy, and like mentioned - save from all the cell phone charger waste. They could call it, similar to what Heather said, them going Green.
ReplyDeleteYou could even go in on a charger with your roomie or a friend and share it - thus eliminating even more potential waste in a couple of years. 2012 is still a while a ways but we'll see - it could happen sooner if they get that ball rolling. =)
I thing that this is a great idea. I have had many phones, some with that use the same chargers and others that don't. But either way they still give you a charger everytime you have a phone, whether you need it or not. And you keep collecting them over the years and most of them are useless. Not only will thismovement help all cellphone companies, that are involved, with their PR but it will also help the consumer save some money. I just hope that it all happens soon and its not just something they will think abour for awhile.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great idea and I cannot believe it took this long for these people to realize this. There is absolutely no reason why they couldn't have done this years ago. But i guess now is better than never. I think this will be a great PR move for the companies that are agreeing to do this. The cell phone companies that are doing this will have an edge over the companies that do not do this because people will pick them so they will get a charger they will be able to use for years to come, no matter what happens to their phone or if they get new ones.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mike, I cannot believe that someone has not thought of this idea sooner! If you own a cell phone, you can relate with this dilemma. I am always interested in ways to reduce the amount of trash in our landfills and to help make our planet “greener”. The fact that 51 thousand tons of waste come from cell phone chargers a year in insane in my mind! The sooner that this universal cell phone charger becomes available to the public the better. I think that the person that invented this deserves some kind of award!
ReplyDeleteIt would be easy money and people would flock to buy them just as they did for the Xbox 360 and Wii...ok maybe not but you catch my drift. It will make our planet greener, save time, manufacturing and space, and be such a hassle-saver!! I look forward to this becoming a reality!
