I will be the first to admit that I watch too much TV; which means there are those jingles and commercials that I have memorized. I can be driving to work and the Hornbacher’s song can come on the radio and I will sing along to it without even realizing it. There are very affective advertisements for food and restaurants that when they’re over they leave my mouth watering. The effectiveness of a commercial is very important it can make or break your product sometimes. This website lists essentials to an effective commercial: 10 Essentials to an Effective TV Commercial.
Right now there is a Cadbury Chocolate Egg commercial for Easter that to me is effective. They have different animals dressed up as the Easter Bunny. Every time I see it I laugh and want a Cadbury Egg. There are Allergy medicine commercials, such as for Singulair, that show how hard it is to live with allergies. Their commercials show how every activity you do make you sneeze and cough and prevent you from living a happy sneeze free life. I don’t even have allergies and sometimes I feel like I need this medicine.
There are also ineffective commercials. Medicine commercials that list worse side effects than what the medicine treats for aren’t appealing to me. There are also really annoying commercials. The Progressive commercials with Flo really get on my nerves. The lady is too perky and annoying I focus too much on her that I don’t listen to the meaning of the commercial.
Advertising campaigns also have their tricks to make an advertisement more effective. A catchy jingle that you get stuck in your head all day helps get the word out. The use of sound is also effective; there are always those commercials that are way louder than the show you are watching or the other commercials to catch your attention. Sometimes they are so loud it scares you. However, it works it gets your attention back on the TV if you were visiting and forces you to see what is making the TV so loud.
Commercials come and go, some work and some don’t. Advertising is key in making products successful in today’s world. Check out this website to see reasons Advertisement is Critically Important. Whether it is on the radio or on TV if your advertisement is effective it will bring you more attention and hopefully more profit. Any good PR department knows this and uses it to their advantage.

I, like you, always find myself singing the songs that go with commercials or other typs of advertising ads. They usually work on me too, seeing commercials over and over makes my familiar with the product or company. I'ts easier to buy a prodcuct that I am familiar with. I believe that when a company spends money on advertising and its an effective advertisement it can be very benefial for them.
ReplyDeleteThe way you approached this blog brought back memories of last semester when I took Communication Research Methods. For my project, I studied the ability of a small focus group to recall different types of commercials. It looked at different things, such as the effects the viewers’ moods and emotions had on their ability to recall, as well as the type of programming that was shown before and after the commercial.
ReplyDeleteI had had no idea how much work most companies put into deciding on how to advertise their products. A significant amount of research is typically done to work through the factors I mentioned above plus many more. As witnessed throughout this blog, there are several companies that do not succeed, but the majority get at least a B from me!
I have to tell you that I also love commercials – currently my favorite is the e-trade baby commercials. The public relations company that E-Trade uses really came up with a great concept. Their use of an innocent baby, giving advice to adults while using technology is hysterical. The latest one where the baby is in a golf club house and calls the older person a “shankapodamus” is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI do have to admit that the Cadbury commercials make me wish I could eat chocolate – I love the lion with the ears. The creators of the commercial must be very impressed that the commercial they made has had an incredible shelf life. I know that I have seen the commercial for at least five years. That’s amazing for a commercial
I don't watch a whole lot of TV, so I don't know what the newest fun commericals are. But I do know that they are catchy. I hear a lot more things on the radio because that's what I'm usually able to do. Some companies are smart. As mentioned in your blog, Hornbachers... Thats a hard one to not go along with. Glitz and Glam and Catchy jinlges seems to be the way to go. oh and BTW - Flo rocks! haha silly.. she's fun - maybe a little too excited, but makes me chuckle everytime.
ReplyDeleteIt is depressing really how many little jingles and commercial scripts I know. Stephen and I can say so many of them that you would think we do nothing BESIDES watch TV and that's not the case at all. The e-trade baby commercials crack me up everytime I see them. I also enjoy the Fidelity Investments commercials. Investments are a very large part of today's economy and news. Therefore, advertising for investment companies are a hot-spot right now. I believe advertising is a GREAT PR tool because it gets your company out there to the public and can prove to them that you might be better for them than who they currently use.
ReplyDeleteI agree that there are good commercials and bad commercials. The good ones, to me, tend to have a catchy jingle or are humorous. Sometimes however, feel that some of the worst commercials out there work because you seem to remember the worst of the worst as much as you remember the great ones. There is obviously not as many of those that work like the good ones but I feel that there are some of them. I also agree with you that some of the medicine commercials that have worse side effects then the medicine does good. It doesn’t make sense to me why you would even make the commercial, but I guess it’s working.
